What to See at Louvre Abu Dhabi

Louvre Abu Dhabi offers a mix of permanent galleries, major artworks, temporary exhibitions and architectural experiences. Rather than grouping its collection by country, the museum presents art and artefacts chronologically, showing connections between different cultures and periods of human history

  • Permanent Collection: Explore around 600 masterpieces from the museum's growing collection, covering thousands of years of human creativity.
  • Chronological Galleries: Follow 12 galleries or chapters that take visitors from prehistory towards the modern world, with artworks from different cultures presented alongside shared themes and ideas.
  • Major Artworks: Discover paintings, sculptures, archaeological objects, manuscripts and decorative arts, with displays regularly refreshed through loans from international partner institutions.
  • The Dome: Admire Jean Nouvel's iconic dome and its distinctive “rain of light” effect, created by thousands of geometric openings. The outdoor plaza beneath the dome is also part of the visitor experience.
  • Current Exhibitions: Louvre Abu Dhabi presents a changing programme of temporary exhibitions alongside its permanent collection, so what is on display can vary by visit date.
  • Children's Museum: Families can explore dedicated programming designed to introduce children to art and culture through interactive learning and play.

Louvre Abu Dhabi Dome & Architecture

The museum's dome, designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Jean Nouvel, is its defining feature. Built from layered, perforated geometric panels, the structure filters sunlight through the roof to create a moving pattern of light and shadow across the plaza below — an effect the museum describes as a "rain of light."

The dome appears to float above the museum's cluster of white buildings, with water surrounding much of the site reinforcing that sense of weightlessness. It's worth allowing time to walk the plaza underneath the dome itself, not just the indoor galleries, since the light effect is part of the experience.

After exploring Abu Dhabi's art and culture, continue your sightseeing with a visit to Qasr Al Watan, the magnificent Presidential Palace.
